Because my wife is Ukrainian-American, I have had the enjoyment of her large Ukrainian-American family. While community and their Ukrainian culture are important to many of them, they tend to be more inclined to independent thinking than are even most Americans. They are quite capable in combining a strong sense of community with a high regard for individual freedom and self-responsibility. My wife being more independent minded and self-responsible than most, it may be that she arose in a more independent-minded Ukrainian family than most, but even outside her family in the community of Ukrainian-Americans, such traits seem to be fairly common.
