Timothy,

I am curious if you have read and have comments about Harper Lee's book, Go Set a Watchman. It also seems to be about Village Revolt.

I did not know this. Thanks for discussing these pioneering women and their concept of liberty as a kind of self-sufficiency and "to thine own self be true." I had not viewed the New Deal as a "plot" against individual self-reliance; though I can understand that perspective, I mostly viewed it as a response to the immense suffering caused by the Great Depression. I did not know this: "Under the National Industrial Recovery Act, Motor Carrier Act, Civil Aeronautics Act, and other federal laws, Franklin Roosevelt’s bureaucracies were prohibiting entrepreneurs from devising new business plans or lowering their prices without first getting government permission." Sounds like excessive government control and counter-productive at that!

Finding a balance between the individual and the community seems to be a constant quest in our American experiment: How to be an individual but also to live in and be (at least somewhat) responsible to the community?
